Whom is Generally Believed to be the Best Male Hollywood Film Actor in the History of Cinema?

I have actually heard that Spenser Tracy is widely regarded as one of the best actors in Hollywood history but when I look at his work he always seems to be playing the same character (IMHO). I believe that Jack Nicholson is the actor who has received the most accolades but again, he doesn't show much variety in his roles. It's hard to think of an actor who is a "Meryl Streep", one who completely disappears into the parts he is playing but I believe the closest one is Stanley Tucci. I have seen him in so many movies where he is barely recognizable and completely different from other characters he has played.
