Classic Vintage Design Jewelry Coming From Gothic To Art Deco As Well As Romanticism
An particularly popular form of vintage style jewellery today is that of Gothic jewellery and this style has its roots firmly in continental Europe of the 14th/15th centuries. primarily inspired by the designs and architecture of the Gothic buildings of the period of time. things of this vintage style jewelry included human figures and a lot of openwork design, Gothic jewellery pieces were more delicate than in previous time periods.
Well known for being worn by members of the French and Burgundian courts who wore this vintage style jewellery somewhat extravagantly. Finger rings were worn along with jeweled belts sporting ornate buckles, jewelry also incorporated brooches which were extremely popular during the period.
Romanticism came about in the late 18th century and this vintage style jewelry was to have a important effect on western jewelry, main influences becoming the public curiosity and fascination with discoveries being made through the start of current archaeology, another fascination of the interval was Medieval and Renaissance art. It was also the onset of the industrial revolution bringing about transforming social conditions and creating a center class that both wanted and could afford jewellery. With the industry came industrial techniques, meaning stone substitutes and cheaper alloys which eventually led to the growth of costume jewelry or paste.
Another popular form of vintage jewellery is that of Art Deco, becoming a famed art movement that had remarkable influence in the jewellery world. Art Deco came about as a protest against the Art Nouveau style during the 1920's only to end in the 1930's. Art Deco was focused on a very abstract design and geometric patterns which remain popular in vintage style jewelry to this day.
At the end of the war in 1914 vast fortunes were being made and much of the Art Deco jewelry is highly luxurious in design, as money was accessible to buy the finest materials such as diamonds, platinum, red and yellow gold all of which were used in the design of Art Deco, not all jewelry of this style although is of such a high value and there are many beautiful but less expensive items accessible. Art Deco vintage style jewelry became once again very popular during the 1960's and 1970's.
being strongly influenced by its predecessor Art Deco, a well liked form of jewelry is the Retro style. Incorporating many similarities but with heavier and bolder shapes, lines and stones. A typical design for the retro style jewelry is the imitation of folded fabric and the ribbon bow becoming the most popular motif, normally highlighted with a central ruby or sapphire knot. The Tank bracelet was another design typical of the retro style, so termed as it resembled the caterpillar paths of a tank.
Platinum was not available during this period due to the war effort and so gold became popular once more for items of vintage style jewelry. And this was the reason that during the retro period of time many colors of gold were to be used, the goldsmiths in France were once working with 27 shades of gold. Rose gold and yellow gold were combined together with inexperienced gold which created many striking combinations.
